Bloody clash as Shiv Sena provokes Mann men by
burning effigy
WSN News
Tarn Taran: Nothing could be more blatant than the writing on the
wall. And literally so. But the Punjab Police failed to read it. The
Shiv Sena in Tarn Taran had put up posters saying it will burn the
effigy of Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann, a
step clearly objected to my Mann loyalists. Shiv Sena was peeved
about Mann's observations in a community journal about a small time
Sena leader.
As Sena hooligans tried to burn's Mann's effigy on December 3 and it
became clear that police would remain a mute spectator, Mann's men
reacted. Lathis and swords flashed and in the no-holds-barred clash,
at least five activists of the Shiv Sena and Akali Dal (Amritsar)
were injured. The injured included Ashwani Kumar Kukku, district
president of the Shiv Sena and the villian of the piece.
But what the clash really exposed was the total inefficiency of the
local administration though many clearly daw a design in it. The
calculation seemed to be that any scenes of violence telecast
repeatedly on Indian TV channels would only give a bad name to Mann
and the Akalis. And this is exactly what happened. The opposition
led by Prakash Singh Badal had little reason to question the
government about why the police allowed the Sena men to burn the
effigy or to put provocative posters across the town, since Mann is
a staunch rival of not just CM Amarinder Singh but also of Badal.
As news reports in Punjab media established, Kukku had also tied up
with the activists of Badal-led Akali Dal in his effigy-burning
temper-raising plans. While five activists of Mann's party were
among the 15 arrested under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of
Indian Penal Code, SSP S.K.Sinha confirmed that no one from the Shiv
Sena was arrested.
The Khalra Mission Organisation has held the Shiv Sena, RSS and the
Akali Dal (Badal) responsible for the clash.
