My parents
murdered by husband, says this girl
WSN Network
BATALA: She
married the boy for love. Her parents never liked the boy, would
fire gun shots outside their house and chased them from town to
town. Finally, they killed the boy in cold blood. Now she wants her
own parents to be arrested and tried for murder. This is the story
of an honor killing, part of a pattern being increasingly noticed in
Punjab.
Jatinder Kaur of
Nawa Pind, whose husband was killed for honour by her family, has
accused the Batala police of stalling arrests under political
influence. Her husband was killed on August 11. She said she had wed
Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Saidmubarak village, a year-and-a-half
back, against her family's wishes. They severed all ties with her
and threats followed. Jatinder said they would often fire gunshots
outside her in-laws' home and compelled them to break ties with the
couple out of fear.
"My husband and
I moved to Amritsar, then Jalandhar, moving from one town to another
to dodge them but every time we visited our in-laws, they would try
to assault us," said Jatinder.
Their repeated
appeals for police protection went unheard, she added.
"My family tried
to assault us when we came to get our marriage registered at Punjab
and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh as well, but the UT police came
to our rescue," said the girl. Gurpreet was shot on the way to his
fields early morning August 11.
