Because the truth needs to be
told
The World Sikh News
management had decided to showcase the ways in which the print and
web editions of the WSN have been trying to engage with the Sikh
community’s concerns and interests and provide a platform to the
community to articulate its perspective on various issues. It was
with such an approach in mind that the WSN Special Edition dedicated
to NRI Punjabi Sammelan carried the following editorial.

In the masthead market of the United States,
South Asian community newspapers scream for attention
but either strut around with partisan agendas peeping out of their
back pockets or display a total lack of ideological stance on issues
that matter. If the World Sikh News has become a phenomenal success
in a relatively little time, it is because of its determination to
stick to a set of positive values in both indepth news and
insightful analysis.
We have catered to the intellectually-discerning readership, with an
understanding that the unique breadth of coverage must be matched
with an artful presentation, and written with verve and style. The
World Sikh News has striven to expand the domain of news from the
conventional patterns and endeavored to reach out to the full
spectrum of the readers’ needs. At the conclave of the Non-Resident
Punjabis, it is participating in the belief that the Diaspora will
appreciate the professionalism that the World Sikh News has brought
to the domain of community journalism abroad.
Every week, the newspaper holds a mirror – to its
own people. The courageous look straight into it and the rest look
away. Non-Resident Punjabis desperately need to go beyond
dependency. We welcome this cross-section of the community to be
part of the experience. The Europeans used to quip that wherever the
potato is found, the Sikh is to follow. WSN has a plan.
Wherever there is a Sikh, WSN is sure to follow. In this issue, we
have tried to give you a little glimpse of the fare that WSN has
been spreading every week.
History of colonialism, transformation in
nation-states, the rights campaigns, the global market mechanism,
and struggle for ethnic-recognition are issues that concern WSN. How
does one do ethnography of transnational communities and what are
the ethics and politics of ethnocentricity is an ongoing debate on
the pages of WSN. We are making an effort for an emancipatory
pedagogy. Be a part of it.
