Now, Seechewal
sets sights on Sidhwan
LUDHIANA:
Now,
there's some hope for those who want to see a cleaner Sidhwan. On
Sunday, Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, the man behind the cleaning of
Kali Bein, joined the Sidhwan cleaning project initiated by Gurbaksh
Singh. To mark the beginning of the project,
Seechewal
removed waste from the canal himself. He expressed his concern over
the pollution of rivers and other natural resources in the country,
especially
Punjab.
''We should know
what kind of problems we are creating for the posterity by our
misconduct.
There is a need
to worship the nature, which is the real gift of God. Rather than
throwing grains and cereals in the canal, it is better to use these
for feeding the poor. I am looking forward to seeing clean rivers
and the days when there would be no need for buying water bottles
from the market to quench thirst,'' he added. Seechewal said the
industry and the civic bodies were the ones violating the laws by
disposing of the waste in the open.
On the
contribution of politicians and the authorities, he said, ''Had they
been working, the condition would never have been this bad. I do not
know any politicians or the authorities as I do not recognize them.
My mission is to work.'' Eminent Punjabi poet Surjit Patar stressed
the need to save the natural re sources, citing examples from the
scriptures, especially the
prayer by Guru
Nanak Dev. There was a need to feel the presence of God beyond the
structures of religious places as well, as this would stop us from
polluting the environment, he added.
Kar sewa for the
cleaning drive would start in February as soon as the river becomes
dry. ''People from all walks of life, including politicians,
educationists, artists, officers and NRIs, will participate in this
drive,'' said Gurbaksh.
