Punjab MLAs unite, give
themselves your money
WSN Network
CHANDIGARH: THis
was one step that Punjab MLAs took unanimously. Last Thursday, they
voted in one voice recommending for themselves a nearly 2.5-time
hike in their own salary besides higher allowances.
Also, they gave
themselves with the tax payer's money a laptop each and an
entitlement of Rs 15,000 a month as constituency allowance, Rs 3,000
a month as sumptuary allowance, Rs 1,000 as daily allowance and Rs
5,000 a month as secretarial allowance. The amounts allowed for free
travel was hiked Rs 1.25 lakh, house building advance Rs 40 lakh
from earlier Rs 10 lakh and car loan Rs 10 lakh from earlier Rs 6
lakh.
While the
finance department was opposed to the hike in view of the poor
financial health of the state, Punjab MLAs, by comparison with some
other states, argued that they were under-paid.
Now, Punjab MLAs
can boast of one the best pay scales in the country next only to
prosperous Gujarat. Add to this, allowances to cover travel, office
and communication expenses, loans for housing and cars, and the
final figure works out to be every taxpayer’s envy.
