Karate kid Davinderpal Singh
seeks sponsorship for
World championship
Jagmohan Singh
10
year old Davinderpal Singh, a student of Guru Harkrishan Public
School India Gate,
New Delhi
may become the youngest boy to contest in the upcoming World
Kanazawa Karate Championship in
Ukraine, if he
is able to muster community support needed to pay for his ticketing
and other needs for the tournament.
After winning
silver medals in the national tournament, alongwith four others, he
has been selected for the tournament two weeks back.
Davinderpal
Singh's father Bhupinder Singh is an employee with the Delhi Sikh
Gurdwara Management Committee and is desperately looking for
sponsorship of around 2000 dollars for his son as the tournament is
slated to begin on 27 April.
Davinderpal Singh has achieved 2nd position at the
seventh Asano-Kershaw All India Karate Championship organised by
Shotokan Karate Do International Federation of India, 2nd position
in twelfth National Karate Championship held in 2007 organised by
Sports Karate Association of Delhi and 2nd position in
All India SKI Karate Invitational Championship 2007 organised by
Shotokan Karate Do International Federation Japan.
Satnam Singh has
been training Davinderpal Singh for the last two years. He is a
trained coach and is the chief instructor of the
Delhi
state unit of the Shotokan Karate-Do Institute of India (Reg.). He
is confident that the young lad will give a good performance at the
championship and is also running helter-skelter trying to muster
moral and financial support for Davinderpal Singh.
World Sikh News
appeals to all readers to get in touch with Bhupinder Singh (email:
newera13@rediffmail.com, Phone: 00 91 98687 09879) and arrange
for the funding of the child's trip to Ukraine.
Tete-a-tete with Davinderpal Singh
WSN checked up
with young Davinder Pal Singh about his interest in Karate and this
is what he had to say.
WSN:
What spurred your interest in Karate?
Davinderpal
Singh: I am very much interested in defense personnel. I see
movies of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan and have decided to become brave
like them.
WSN: Between
sports and studies, what comes first? How do you manage both?
Davinderpal Singh: Both are very necessary. I can manage both
because I don't spend much time on TV and concentrate on my
training.
WSN:
What is your practice schedule?
Davinderpal Singh: In the morning, my father massages my
body and I do some Yoga before I go to school. My school sports
teacher provides me tips on fighting and then I practice in the
evening. I have taken admission in two new Dojos and learn from
three teachers.
WSN:
How does your family meet your sporting expenses?
Davinderpal Singh: My father works for the Delhi Sikh
Gurdwara Management Committee. With this hard-earned money my
mother Tarlochan Kaur manages the education of three kids.
WSN:
What kind of sponsorship are you looking for?
Davinderpal
Singh:
My ticket and stay of 8 days in Ukraine would cost me around 97, 000
rupees.
WSN:
In case you are able to go to Ukraine, what do you expect?
Davinderpal
Singh:
I do not know which one, but I am determined to win a medal.
WSN:
Have you had any support or sponsorships?
Davinderpal
Singh:
So far, I have gone to Amritsar, Chandigarh and other places on my
own. Of course, I have the moral support of my teacher, Satnam
Singh.
WSN:
Who has been your mentor in sports?
Davinderpal
Singh:
Guru Sahiban are my mentors. Safeguarding the poor and
weaker people is the mission I have learnt from Sakhis
narrated to me by my parents from the lives of Gurus.
WSN:
What are your feelings about going to
Ukraine??
Davinderpal Singh: I am quiet excited. In case I go I will
be the first ten-year old and definitely the first ten year old Sikh
boy to contest the world karate championship.
