Weightlifter Harbans Singh passes away

KUALA
LUMPUR: Indian born, 71 year old veteran weightlifter and veteran
Sikh Malaysian Harbans Singh Ji died after being knocked down by a
speeding car at Gasing, Petaling Jaya and succumbed to his injuries
at the University Hospital here late Monday night.
He will be cremated
at the PJ Crematorium, Kg Tunku on 9 October at 4.30 pm.
Harbans Singh
was a three-gold hero in weighlifting at the 1975 Seap Games in
Bangkok
and had competed in the middle-heavy category. He won
a silver in the
1967 and 1969 games, a gold at the 1971 games and a silver in the
1973 games.
Harbans Singh
had also represented
Malaya in the
Commonwealth Games in 1963, the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 and the 1974
Asian Games in Teheran.
He is survived
by his wife Gian Kaur, sons Sochait Singh, Daljit Singh and daughter
Harbinthar Kaur.
Last year Club
Aman honoured Harbans Singh in the Senior Sportsman category while
the Malaysia/Singapore Sikhs Sports Council awarded him the Special
Sportsman Achievement Award for Outstanding Performance for the
country in Malacca this year.
The Subang Sikh
Association Selangor recognised Sardar Harbans Singh as its
outstanding resident at its annual dinner in 2006. He was awarded a
plaque and a citation which acknowledged his contribution to the
game of weightlifting and to the community.
