AMRITSAR: The
precincts of Akal Takht Sahib were brimming with school and college
going children dressed in traditional colours of yellow, blue and
white with religious fervour oozing from their being. The sangat
around the complex was in awe of these youngsters, who had gathered
to seek the blessings of the Takht and presents from the organizers
of the Sehaj Path Lehar under the aegis of the Sukrit Trust, after
passing Gurbani competition tests at 12 centres across Punjab.
While most Sikh
organizations would be initiating the Gurta Gaddhi celebrations,
Sukrit has finished the first lap and has set in motion a gigantic
task for itself by continuing it for the next ten years by declaring
to observe 2008-2018 as the Decade of Spiritual Renaissance.
The happiness of
sisters Amardeep Kaur of Class sixth and Harpreet Kaur of Class
twelfth from the village of Ghasitpur in Amritsar district knew no
bounds as they collected the Rupees One lakh prize from veteran
Kirtani and spiritual personality, Bhai Jeewan Singh for their
proficiency in Gurbani Sehaj Path, Gurbani Vichar, Memorising
Gurbani, Gurbani Talk and Gurbani Handwriting. Encouraged by their
success, the management of their school,
Guru Harkrishan
Public School has decided to take up the project for every school
child and every single house in village Ghasitpur has vowed to do
Sehaj Path.
Setting
an example for others to emulate, the programme was a culmination of
a year long path breaking exercise to do Sehaj Path of the 1430
pages of Guru Granth Sahib, rather than participate in
self-aggrandizing marches and leadership-eulogising functions.
Started some years ago by the
Guru Gobind
Singh Study Circle, the Sukrit leadership of Jaswinder Singh Khalsa
and Prof. Sarabjit Singh has delivered a miracle. More than ten
thousand students participated in the Sehaj Path programme and 3000
completed the recitation alongwith understanding the meaning and
importance of the teachings. Jatinder Singh walked away with a lap
top computer as the second prize and said, “Now I know, who my Guru
is, prior to this I used to only worship; now I understand too.”
When asked about
the major impact of the movement, suave and shy Sarabjit Singh
Renuka said, “We are doing our small bit to partake the blessings of
Guru Granth Sahib. More than seventy percent girls have
participated and that is very encouraging. Parents and family
members of those who have started the Path have given up liquor and
drugs. The very environment of homes has changed.”
As
is his wont, Sarabjit Singh would not complain, but this
correspondent is aware that both the SGPC and DSGMC did not make
available the required number of Sainchis, Shabdarth and Pothies
of Guru Granth Sahib to the energetic team of Sukrit. They somehow
managed to go this far and that is a tribute to their selfless sewa
and dedication to their motto –Spiritual, Academic and Professional
Excellence.
Significantly,
many students from other faiths also participated in the competition
and were awarded mementoes, medals, computers, cameras etc.
Bachelor of Arts
student Kulwinder Kaur from
Ludhiana bagged
the first prize in Gurbani Kanth memorizing 59 banies from Sri Guru
Granth Sahib. The first Sukrit Sewa Ratan Award–2008 was bestowed on
Kamalpreet Kaur of village Jarg, district Ludhiana for her all round
selfless services to the community.
Kamalpreet Kaur
was ecstatic and said that “this is the best way to defeat the
growth of pseudo-deras. Let all parents adopt this affirmative
approach, let all families and villages start Sehaj Path and Sikhi
Sewa, the deras will automatically shut down”
The
tone and tenor for the day long function was set by the huge
hoarding set up focusing on the need for religiosity in one’s llves.
The hoardings read, 'Sehaj Paath -- Puts glow in our Eyes, Smile on
our Face and Spring in our Walk'; 'Spirituality is beyond religious,
cultural and national barriers'; 'Sehaj Paath -- Dispels all fears
and worries'. 'Enjoy Everlasting Eternal Bliss'; 'Let us
spiritualize every moment, action and feeling'; 'We are Spiritual
beings on human journey'; ‘Spirituality helps in Academics' etc.

This campaign
has enabled the true seekers to have the appropriate Darshan of Guru
Granth Sahib –Darshan not as an object of worship but as a Living
World Teacher. If every Sikh and every seeker of salvation does
that and makes Sehaj Path a part of his Nitnem –daily habit, the
community is destined for better times and this world a better place
to live.
