WSN Bureau
The
second largest political party in the New Zealand Parliament and a
strong opposition to the ruling minority Labour government is
fielding Kanwal Singh Bakshi from the Manaku East constituency for
the general elections slated for 8 November 2008.
The party which
emphasizes that it is "against political correctness and strongly
for personal freedom and responsibility," stands for a globally
competitive economy and values honesty and fairness, hard work,
respect for achievement and integrity. According to their policy
statement, the National Party seeks a safe, prosperous and
successful New Zealand that
creates opportunities for all New Zealanders to reach their personal
goals and dreams.
A resident of New
Zealand only since 2001, the University of Delhi Commerce Graduate
has been involved with the National Party in many roles for the last
seven years.
An astute
businessman, with interests in property, wholesaling and fashion,
Kanwaljit Singh is the Deputy Chairperson of the India Trade Group
Inc. and an executive member of the Auckland Indian Association.
He is the Vice
Chairman of the Hindu Heritage Centre's (Management Committee) and
the Secretary of the Auckland Sikh Society which has its base in the
Manukau East electorate. He was a founder member of Sikh Naujawan
Sabha, an organisation which focuses on assisting teenage children
to meet their full potential.
As a relatively
recent migrant, Bakshi will have a lot of leg work to do to
popularize the policies of the National Party though his advantage
would be that he would be working in the Manaku East constituency
which has a substantial immigrant population.
