Four of family dead after quibble over bike
WSN Network

Jalandhar: In a heart rending tragedy that many are blaming on rising aspirational life styles and demands spurred by a material culture, estranged wife of an ASI of Police, her 16-year-old son and two daughters, 20 and 22 years old, committed suicide after a family quibble over buying a Bullet motorcycle.

They all consumed celphos tablets at their home in Shahkot after an altercation between the woman and her teenaged son.

It seems the woman Baljit Kaur's ties with husband were strained and he was away on his posting in Ludhiana. The young son,  Gobindpreet Singh (16), wanted to buy the particular make of the mobike but Baljit bought him a different bike. After an altercation, he went and exchanged the bike for one that he wanted, leading to a higher amount of loan and thus a higher monthly instalment.

The mother then consumed the celphos tablets which, ironically, the son had brought home to scare the mother, threatening that if he did not get the bike he wanted, he would commit suicide.

Police said after the mother consumed poison on Saturday morning in a fit of depression, the children, including Gobindpreet, followed suit, all swallowing the tablets. The deceased include Prabhjit Kaur (22) and Varinder Kaur (20).

It was Baljit’s mother Bachan Kaur (80) that told the entire saga to the police.
