Ajmer Singh's new work engages
with 1984 Catastrophe

NEW
YORK: In a world that has largely come to see path-breaking
technologies, wars between nations, or economic upheavals as having
the potential to change the outlook of a people, perhaps those who
can see an epochal event in the release of a book will be in a
minority. Yet, history has proven time and again that nothing is as
epochal as a new idea or delineation of an idea.
In exactly such an
epochal event for the Sikh community, the new work of well known
author and scholar Sardar Ajmer Singh on the events leading to and
following the 1984 catastrophe, titled "1984 – Unchitviya Kehar"
(1984 – Unimagined Catastrophe), was released in New York.
Typical of Ajmer
Singh, who chooses his words and idiom carefully, the choice of who
to release the book also signified his commitment to the cause he
has pursued and perused for years now. Bibi Devinder Kaur, wife of
martyr Bhai Labh Singh released the book at an impressive gathering
which witnessed participation by almost all the managing committees
of gurdwaras on the East Coast.
In
his address, Ajmer Singh explained how the Indian nation state has
tried to project Sant Bhindranwale as the cause of the Army attack
when he was merely an excuse and the real causes lay interwoven in
history and conduct of the entrenched forces arraigned against the
Sikhs and Sikhism's ideals. As for why the Sant chose to take on the
Army, Ajmer Singh said history was a testament that proves that
mortal human beings have rarely understood in time why and how a
Sant takes a certain decision.
He said those
looking for reasons behind the army attack will have no escape but
to engage with issues of Hindu psyche and understand the Sikh
history and historical streams with a deeply analytical and trained
mind.
The release
ceremony was initiated by Bhai Nirmal Singh Baling while American
Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (AGPC) president Bhai Yaadvinder Singh
briefed the audience about Sardar Ajmer Singh's path-breaking
earlier books, “Veehvin Sadi Da Sikh Itihas” and “Kis Bidh Ruli
Patshahi”.
A question answer
session followed the scholar's address before the event concluded
with S. Gurinderjit Singh Maana thanking the sangat.
