Environment sage forced agenda on
politicos

KAPURTHALA:
Environmental sage and holy greenman Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal has
forced the issue of climate change and water resources on to the
politicians. So when he launched an activist campaign, rival
politicians including pop star turned MP aspirant Hans Raj Hans and
Congress nominee Mohinder Singh Kaypee fighting for Jalandhar Lok
Sabha seat came rushing to pledge to work for cleaning natural water
resources in their constituency.
“I will wage a
war against contamination of natural water resources in my
constituency ,” said Hans. Kaypee said: “The Congress lost the 2007
Assembly elections because we failed to safeguard the environment. I
will raise this issue in Parliament and secure funds for setting up
water-treatment plants in the constituency.” Not many believed them,
but it proved that good men can force an agenda if they are
themselves sincere.
Baba Seechewal
had taken his campaign to the banks of the Kala Sanghian drain to
sensitise the suffering dwellers about their right to question the
politicians on environment issues.
In the first leg
of his 10-day campaign, Baba Seechewal fired a fresh salvo at the
government and sought prosecution of officials over the issue of
unchecked release of untreated industrial and municipal waste into
the Kala Sanghian drain, Budha Nullah and Chitti Bein. He demanded
that the locals be given compensation for losing their health to
this contamination.
