Canadian Sikh stripped of honor
WSN Network
TORONTO: T. Sher
Singh, a prominent member of
Canada's
Sikh community and a writer, has been stripped of his Order of
Canada after he was found guilty in 2007 of professional misconduct
and disbarred by the Law Society of Upper Canada.
In a note on the
website sikhchic.com, T Sher Singh said he always felt the Order of
Canada was honouring the work of many people, not just himself and
left it to the community to judge him. Reports said the order to
take back the award was signed in December and notice was quietly
given in the government's Canada Gazette on March 28 but it seems T
Sher Singh came to know only this week. The writer, a former
contributor to the Toronto Star, was awarded the Order of Canada in
2002 for being "an advocate for the importance of positive race
relations."
"I know it will
deeply distress a lot of people and that is my only disappointment
-- that my failures are going to now cause some distress to others,"
he said.
