Separate Haryana SGPC tussle
issue: Jhinda's fate on hold
WSN Network
AMRITSAR: Making
a strong intervention in an issue laced with electoral politics and
allegedly divisive agendas, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan
Singh has said the consent of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and
Congress president Sonia Gandhi for a separate gurdwara committee
for Haryana, coming ahead of the Assembly elections in that state,
was a political gimmick meant to divide Sikhs for electoral gains.
Speaking in the
presence of jathedars of other takhts, Giani Gurbachan Singh said
they were opposed to the demand for a separate gurdwara panel for
Haryana.
Meanwhile, the
five Sikh high priests who met here decided to keep the decision on
Jagdish Singh Jhinda, president of the ad hoc Haryana Sikh Gurdwara
Parbandhak Committee, and his associates pending till October 14.
People opposed to the Badal group feel the clergy had fixed the date
keeping in view the date of polling in Haryana, which is October 13,
as a decision against Jhinda could have affected the Sikh voters in
the state.
The Jathedar
said the charges against Jhinda and others were serious and the
clergy wanted to examine those thoroughly before pronouncing a
decision. Jhinda and his associates are facing the charge of
"unlawfully" seizing control of an SGPCrun gurdwara at Kurukshetra,
albeit temporarily. Jhinda said he was fine with the clergy trying
to reach the bottom of the issue. "We have explained our viewpoint
that the SGPC is unconstitutionally controlling the Sikh shrines in
Haryana, despite its separation from
Punjab
in 1966," he said, adding that he expected full justice from the
clergy.
