Sangrur fight between Barnala and Dhindsa, rest is all side show
WSN Network

Barnala: Simmering rivalry over the decades has finally come to a boiling point. While most were aware in the ongoing campaigning that the Barnala and Dhindsa factions within the Akali Dal are working at cross purposes, on Tuesday the ugly fight spilled out in the public.

Akali Dal's nominee for the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa got a jolt with a large number of supporters of Tamil Nadu Governor and former Punjab chief minister Surjit Singh Barnala saying publicly that they will go with anyone who can defeat Dhindsa.

SS Barnala was himself was not present but his wife Surjit Kaur Barnala was veyr much there. She has been active in the politics of the area and is quite a power center there. SS Barnala's daughter-in-law Harpreet Kaur was also present.

The speakers openly said, in the presence of the media and on camera, that Dhindsa was responsible for the defeat of seven SAD nominees, including Gaganjit Singh Barnala, in Sangrur and Barnala districts in the Assembly elections.

SGPC member Sanmukh Singh Mokha and former Barnala Improvement Trust chairman Rupinder Singh Sandhu alleged Dhindsa had created hurdles in Barnala’s election as Vice-President of India after opposing him in the area.

Later, talking to reporters, Surjit Kaur Barnala said she would abide by the decision of the workers. She alleged that Dhindsa had not contacted the Barnala family for their support.

Among the candidates fighting from Sangrur are Simranjit Singh Mann and Balwant Singh Ramoowalia apart from Congress' Vijay Inder Singla.
