Punjab
media skips Op Bluestar
WSN Bureau
The
Punjabi language mass circulation newspaper 'Ajit' which carries the
slogan 'Punjab Di Awaz' on its masthead everyday, did not publish a
single word about the 23rd anniversary of the Operation Bluestar in
its June 6 edition.
The
Indian Express' Delhi edition, like the rest of the so-called
national media, did not even touch the subject, while the Chandigarh
edition merely carried a small story on the inside pages about
heightened security arrangements in Golden Temple, and reported in a
matter-of-fact vein: "(T)he ruling SAD(B) is likely to stay away
from the ceremonies."
The
Tribune carried an interview of Indian Ambassador to Madagascar
Daljit Singh Pannun and about his upcoming book. Pannun claimed that
"Bhindranwale never wanted Khalistan." The Tribune rushed to chose
it as the headline of the story. There was no other mention of Op
Bluestar in the edition, the largest selling English newspaper in
the region.
Only, the 'Spokesman' newspaper carried detailed articles and
devoted considerable space to the occasion, publishing excerpts from
books and carrying out many memory-recall articles. Significantly,
the Spokesman editor Joginder Singh was excommunicated by the Sikh
clergy and there is an official bar by the clerics on reading or
cooperating with the Spokesman group.
