JALANDHAR: Even as
visiting Canadian MP Ruby Dhalla has now said that she would impress
upon Prime Minister Stephen Harper to apologise on behalf of the
Canadian Federal government to India and especially the Punjabi
community for forcing the return of the Kamagata Maru ship in 1914,
the world must know that Kamagata Maru passengers have not yet been
accorded the status of freedom fighters by the Indian government.
Malwinderjit Singh Waraich, activist and writer, who had filed a
public interest litigation in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in
2003, said it was ironical that while a foreign government was
appreciating the sentiments, achievements and sacrifice of the
freedom fighters, India remained apathetic. "The same is the case
with Kuka Martyrs of 1872. They are of Malerkotla fame. I had also
fought for their recognition as freedom fighters through a PIL in
2003," he said.
The Canadian government is yet to apologise for the Kamagata Maru
episode in which 376 passengers, largely Punjabis, were turned back
by the then government after spending two months on the high seas
off the coast of Canada.
Canadian House of Commons member and Liberal Party MP from
Brampton-Springdale constituency, Dhalla said she had brought the
matter not only to the notice of the Canadian government, but had
even raised it in Parliament.
