Jagmeet Singh Thind
FRESNO:
Ruby Dhaliwal, the mayor of the city joined a delegation of more
than a 1000 Punjabi American farmers and farm workers from the
central valley in a rally to fix the water infrastructure in
California. Mayor Dhaliwal was joined by renowned Punjabi Farmer
Charanjit S Batth, Didar S Bains, Gurdev S Dhaliwal, Mohan S
Badhesha and seven other Mayors from the central valley.
Addressing the rally, Mayor Dhaliwal said," This Central Valley city
that I represent, falls in the 20th congressional district. Our
district, covers Fresno, Kings and Kern counties and ranks last
among all congressional districts in human development, economy,
health, and life expectancy, With an unemployment rate of 28% and a
poverty rate of 34%, our people are the poorest among the poor in
America.”
She further said that without a reliable supply of water, the
drought would devastate the farming communities. She forthrightly
stated that “our people cannot suffer any more job loss or economic
hardship.”
She told the farmers that Senator Feinstein and Governor
Schwarzenegger agree that the water bond proposal safeguards the
Valley's economy and its very way of life and that she has urged
legislators to get this measure on the November ballot without delay
Though the Water Bond proposal for 9.3 Billion to overhaul
California Water system has support from both side of aisle, but it
faces stern political challenge from democratic side in Assembly and
Senate. However, on 25 July, Governor Schwarzenegger has requested
the Federal Drought Assistance to assist local communities impacted
by state's drought.
