CHRISTCHURCH:
Interesting the mix that cultural fusions create, and wonderful
these are as long as we know and understand our own culture. Dressed
in the traditional Sikh patka, seven-year-old Karanveer Bhabra was
part of the Harewood Primary School kapa haka group. Karanveer's
father Amrik Singh Bhabra says his son loved learning the Maori
songs and actions while mother Kitty Bhabra is proud that her son
enjoyed learning about different cultures and languages.
The 26th annual festival at the Christchurch Town
Hall saw performances from more than 2800 primary and intermediate
pupils from across Canterbury. Event manager Ali Nauman said 7000
visitors had attended. Performers included new groups from the
Chatham Islands, Egypt, the Middle East and Hawaii.
