Ranbir Singh Sodhi elected to
Governors Council in Finland
WSN Bureau
VANTAA, FINLAND:
Scandinavia has had very little taste of Punjabi politics and
politicians. Things will now change as Ranbir Singh Sodhi has been
elected to the Council of Governors in Vantaa province of Finland
–perhaps the first ever South Asian to be so elected.
The ubiquitous
Sikhs are making their presence felt not only in
Canada,
UK and the USA, but are nurturing and developing political ambitions
elsewhere too. Sodhi has been elected for four years as a candidate
of the Social Democratic Party, which is the largest party, but has
narrowly missed the bus in the present elections.
A postgraduate
in economics and Financial Mangement, Sodhi lives in Heikkarharju
city of the Vantaa province and there are less than a hundred
Punjabi families where he lives, which makes his victory all the
more significant.
Announcing his
priorities, Sodhi has said that he is passionate about increasing
commerce and strengthening cultural ties between Punjab and Finland.
Of course, he would also take up local issues, including the biggest
airport in Finland, which is in his constituency.
