PATIALA: Punjabi
University has decided to make it mandatory for students of all
streams to study and clear Punjabi as a compulsory subject to
receive the graduation degree. Making the announcement,
Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh said the language had been made
absolutely compulsory for all students, whether they were of
commerce, humanities, science or professional courses, from the next
academic session.
As per a report
in the Hindustan Times, the V-C said he had also surrendered his
power to exempt students from studying Punjabi. "The Vice-Chancellor
had been granted extraordinary powers in the university Act to give
such exemptions, but I have decided not to exercise these," he
added.
As per the
decision, except for foreign students or those from parts of the
country where studying Punjabi was not possible, anyone enrolled in
undergraduate courses would be required to study Punjabi as a
compulsory subject.
The
Vice-Chancellor said a large number of students were given the
exemption earlier, which had hampered the cause of development of
Punjabi. He said the credits given for the language paper had also
been earlier reduced, which had now been restored to the original
levels.
The university
had also decided to hold a Punjabi conference on its foundation day
on April 30. The Vice-Chancellor said the conference would get the
views of those working to promote Punjabi in regions of the country
where the language was not studied or spoken.
Meanwhile, the
university has decided to introduce around 100 professional job
oriented full-term diploma and certificate courses, of which 26
would be implemented from the coming session.
