Punjab's jails den of corruption, but see who says this!
WSN Network

CHANDIGARH: That Punjab's jails are almost government-designated zones for crime is a secret only too well known to most people, but now a court ordered inquiry conducted by an SSP rank officer has officially put its stamp on the truism.

An inquiry conducted by the Bathinda Senior Superintendent of Police has said the Central Jail, Bathinda, is a den of corruption where basic human rights are violated blatantly.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia, which took suo motu notice of the matter, issued notice to the Punjab government last Monday.

After receiving an anonymous letter from an inmate, the High Court had directed the Bathinda SSP to hold a discreet inquiry.

The Bench stated Additional Advocate General Madhu Dayal accepted the notice and that she "may file a status report" on affidavits of jail authorities.

The SSP would remain present in person on August 6 along with the record pertaining to the inquiry he conducted.

The complainant stated that there was rampant corruption and blatant violation of basic human rights in the jail. The fresh undertrials who pay money are left and those who don't are asked to perform works like sweeping and carrying out garbage.

As per law, an undertrial cannot be asked to work unless convicted.

The complainant stated that he had been in this prison for the past 18 months. He had alleged that the undertrials not only greased the palms of jail authorities but also had to do menial jobs.

The complainant alleged that he had paid Rs 1,500 to a Havaldar for getting his work changed.
