Fake encounters galore: In Manipur, CM himself is party to a lie
WSN Network

Guwahati: Chungkham Sanjit was killed in an encounter on July 23 after he opened indiscriminate fire in the Khwairamband Bazar area of Imphal. Later, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh of Manipur told the Assembly last week that a pregnant woman too was killed in the shootout.

Now, tell tale evidence has emerged that Sanjit was taken inside a pharmacy and shot dead. Photographic evidence published in the media shows that there was no encounter or recovery of weapons from Sanjit.

Manipur is on the boil as a result, people are angry and the CM is under fire. Apunba Lup, an umbrella body of over 30 different civil society organisations, had given a call for a two-day strike. Apunba Lup means Thirty Organisations. The police beat up several women and took some into custody. Apunba Lup said if suitable action was not taken during the strike, there would be more agitations.

One of the photographs showed police commandos taking the youth inside a pharmacy in Imphal, another showed them bringing his blood-soaked lifeless body out.

Sanjit, a former militant, having been a member of the outlawed People’s Liberation Army (PLA), had reportedly quit it a few years ago.

The government has announced a magisterial inquiry into the incidents but the opposition has demanded a judicial inquiry and are also demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh for misleading the House.

Leaders of the Manipur People’s Party led by president Nimaichand Luwang called on Governor Gurbachan Jagat on Monday and wanted action due to the frequency of killings of innocent persons in fake encounters.
