KARNAL:
Buckingham Palace now has a Sikh connection. India-born Lance
Corporal Sarvjit Pal Singh and UK-born Simranjit Singh have joined
the Queen's guards at the palace that serves as her residence.
Sarvjit Pal
Singh, 28, was born at Ganeshpura village, near Naraingarh in Ambala.
His father Assa
Singh back home in the village says the family is overwhelmed by the
achievement of their son. Incidentally, Sarvjit is getting married
in the village in October.
His posting at
Buckingham Palace would be for six months, extendable by another six
months. He had joined the British Army in 2004.
"Guarding
dignitaries is family history," said the proud father, who has taken
a premature retirement as DSP from the Intelligence Bureau.
Sarvjit's grandfather Pritam Singh, who retired from the CRPF, had
been handpicked for the protection duty of J&K leader Sheikh
Abdullah when he was imprisoned in 1953.
Sarvjit's
youngest brother, Adarsh Pal Singh, is also serving in the British
Army.
A student of
S.D. College, Ambala, Sarvjit joined the Army Air Corps in the
UK,
attracted by the excitement and adventure of the career. Earlier
this month, he returned from a six-month stint in
Afghanistan.
At present, he is a member of the 3rd Regiment of the Army Air
Corps, stationed at Wattisham, Suffolk.
