BAKERSFIELD: The hosts are confident Hillary
and Bill Clinton will be on hand for a breakfast fundraiser Nov. 18
at the Kern County Fairgrounds, even though campaign managers won't
confirm their attendance. Whether the presidential hopeful or former
president show up or not, Kern County is turning out to be a
fundraising hotbed for Hillary Clinton, in large part due to strong
support from the local Sikh community. Clinton, a Democrat, has
pulled in at least $158,600 from Kern donors, a Californian analysis
of contributions reported as of Monday shows.
That's more than five times as much as the next
candidate, Republican Mitt Romney, with $30,800 in local
contributions.
If Clinton shows, she'll be the first among the
current crop of presidential hopefuls to come to town. In late
September, Romney canceled an appearance planned for Dewar's Candy.
The Clinton fundraiser is being held the same day as the annual Guru
Nanak celebration honoring the birth of the Sikh religion's founder.
Sharnjit Dhaliwal, spokeswoman for the host group, Sikh Americans
for Hillary '08, said the community has become more politically
active in recent years. Kern is home to about 30,000 Sikhs, Dhaliwal
estimated.
