SAVE SIKHISM FROM SGPC
WSN launches Online Campaign on Sehajdhari issue

It is time to Act. Sign petition NOW.

Dear Reader:

Acting under influence of Panthic bodies, though the SGPC has buckled and withdrawn its impugned affidavit on the Sehajdhari issue, it is important to maintain the pressure as the court proceedings are likely to continue for some time, till the cases reaches its logical conclusion.

For new readers, the story is like this:

Like in many cases in the past, this time the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has bungled on the Sehajdhari issue.

Sometime ago, a Sikh  girl who had been denied admission into Guru Ram Das Medical college on the grounds that she had shaved her eyebrows, petitioned the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking redress.  The High Court did not grant her any relief, but asked the SGPC to answer the following question, "Whether or not a person who cuts his hair and/or shaves his beard is a "Sehajdhari Sikh"?

The SGPC appointed a committee of scholars and experts to formulate an opinion. The committee agreed to stick to the 1938 resolution of the SGPC whereby, "A person cannot claim to be a Sehajdhari by trimming/cutting his/her hair, beard or eyebrows in any manner".

However, under some unknown pressure or a serious lapse of understanding, the SGPC filed an affidavit on 5 December, 2008, saying, "Once a Sehajdhari becomes a Keshadhari Sikh, he under no circumstances by cutting/trimming his/her hair, beard, eye-brows in any manner can claim to be a Sehajdhari Sikh."

This definition is fraught with danger as this would mean that anyone and everyone can claim to be a Sahahdhari Sikh and continue to keep cutting hair.  This opens the possibility of great mischief by allowing unprecedented numbers to become voters for the SGPC, though in the last SGPC elections Sahajdharis were disenfranchised. If you do not stop this, don't be surprised if the next SGPC president is a non-Sikh.

The online petition initiated by World Sikh News is directed to the President of the SGPC seeking immediate withdrawal and corrective step.

It is time for action. There is no point in regretting, fuming and fretting. Let everyone stand up to set things right, well in time. Let the SGPC know that the Sikh nation is wide awake to its rights.

Join us by signing the online petition. It will not take more than two minutes.
