NCM urges Govt to take early
decision on migrant Sikh youth
WSN Network
NEW DELHI: About
10,000 Sikh youths, now in their middle age, who had fled to UK, US,
Canada and Germany in the aftermath of the Operation Blue Star in
1984 and had
been
subsequently blacklisted by the Government, are awaiting a decision
which might restore them their Indian passports and enable their
return to
India.
The National Commission for Minorities(NCM) has made a
representation to the Government to
review the cases
of these people on merit and allow them to return to
India.
NCM Member Harcharan Josh has said that the Commission had sent a
report to the Centre recently after his visit to
UK
where the blacklisted Sikhs had met him and urged him to plead their
cases to the Government.
He said these people had fled the country for
Canada,
US, UK and Germany etc afer the operation Blue Star in
Golden
Temple
in Amritsar for garnering support and were subsequently blacklisted
for carrying on anti-Government propaganda.
In view of the changed
circumstances in
Punjab
now and also of the advancing age of these migrants, the Government
has been requested to consider the application of these people on a
case to case basis, he said, adding the representation was made to
the Government in October but so far there was no response. He said
the Commission would again urge the Government to consider the plea
of the migrant Sikhs and take a decision soon.
