Will Parminder Singh Saini be
able to practise law in Canada?
WSN Network
TORONTO: With
his immigration status still up in the air, a convicted Sikh
terrorist will find out in the coming weeks whether he can practise
law in Toronto.
Parminder Singh
Saini, who has been fighting deportation from Canada since 1995,
this month completed a "good character" hearing mandated by the Law
Society of Upper Canada to determine whether he is eligible for a
lawyer's licence. The hearing panel reserved its decision
indefinitely, and society spokeswoman Jane Withey said it could be
weeks or even months before a result is handed down.
Saini was among
thnose accused of hijacking an Air India flight on its way from
India to Pakistan in 1984, as a amrk of protest against the Indian
army's attack on Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Sri Darbar Sahib and tens
of other gurdwaras across
Punjab.
No one was
seriously injured in the incident, but Saini was arrested and
sentenced to life imprisonment in a Pakistani jail. He was released
after 10 years and came to Canada.
He has since
been fighting to stay in this country, a process that has been
grinding its way through layers of federal bureaucracy for years.
For their part, Saini and his lawyer, Frank Addario, are not giving
interviews until the judgment is released.
