Unforgettable Hero consigned to flames
Ishmeet Singh cremated in Ludhiana
WSN Network

LUDHIANA: Even the gods cried. It was pouring intermittently adding to the already existing humidity, but that could not deter the thousands who had come to pay homage to Ishmeet Singh.

The area around Model Town Extension cremation grounds, adjacent to the canal flowing through the city saw a sea of humanity pay their last tributes to the young Sikh icon, which had caught the imagination of the community. Children, youngsters, elderly people, men and women from all over Punjab descended to catch the glimpse of the face of Ishmeet Singh, a face which had launched the Sikh face on the map of the tinsel world of the Indian music industry.

Family, friends, fans, actors and singers from Punjab and Mumbai, religious leaders, politicians, police, and government representatives –everyone was there. In an unprecedented honour, the Punjab government accorded a state funeral and ensured the arrival of the dead body of the singer from Delhi to Ludhiana in a chartered flight.

Singers Hans Raj Hans, Mika and Abhijeet and MLAs Harish Rai Dhanda and Hira Singh Ghabria warmly commiserated with the family, which was at loss of words at the love and affection shown by people who had come impromptu to grieve his death. Baba Sarabjot Singh Bedi, members of the Jawaddi Taksal, members of the Gursikh Family Club were seen consoling the father Gurprinder Singh and also discussing the stories of suspicion about foul play because of loopholes in the postmortem report and the mysterious circumstance of his death.

The tearful farewell to the 19 year old saw more people at the cremation grounds and the Gurdwara Sahib than one would see for any other popular politician or star.

The Bhog in memory of Ishmeet Singh would be held at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Model Town Extension, Ludhiana on Sunday, 3 August 2008 from 12.30 onwards.
