Books on Sikhism
donated to library

NEW YORK: Concerned over increasing incidents of Sikhs being
attacked, a North Brunswick resident, Rajinder Gadhok, donated a
collection of books and DVDs to the township's library, hoping that
people will educate themselves about Sikh religion. "Because of
9/11, some Sikhs have been misidentified for Mus lims because of our
turbans and beards. They've been assaulted," Gadhok, 71, said. "I
felt it was important to donate the books so people can acquaint
themselves with the Sikh religion."
Though no such
incidents have been reported in North Brunswick, Gadhok said he
decided to donate the collection to his hometown library as a way of
acting locally to educate his neighbors about Sik hism, a
monotheistic religion with more than 25 million followers worldwide.
Gadhok made a $165
donation to the New York-based Sikh Coalition, and officials used
the money for its Library Project, which has a goal of getting 10
books and two DVDs on the Sikh religion in every library in America.
Cheryl McBride,
director of the North Brunswick Library, said the books and DVDs are
on display and have proven to be pretty popular.
