Did media
speculate on the culture issue?

DELTA - Nearly a week
after sections of the media panned the Punjabi culture for the
killing of an infant, it is now being argued that culture was being
raised unnecessarily in the slaying of toddler Rajvinder Kaur Kahlon
in Delta and the local Sikh gurdwara president Balwant Singh Gill
held the media guilty of unfair speculation in the matter.
He said the fact that of the accused suffering from mental illness
was largely ignored. Meanwhile, the funeral for the baby girl was an
emotional occasion and cremation took place at Delta's Five Rivers
Funeral home. The accused Lakhvinder Singh Kahlon's wife Manjit says
his deep depression had worsened and "has to be factored in to
whatever terrible thing happened in the family's home before the
toddler's body was found".
Lakhwinder, 47, did not get enough help with his depression, Manjit
said. It seems the family is poor. Emotions overran at the funeral
as the killed infant's older sister addressed about 200 people in
attendance, standing by the side of the little white coffin and amid
photos of happier times and bouquets of flowers. "It is a family
tragedy and all these people who are talking don't know anything,"
the gurdwara president said.
The Vancouver Sun, in a spot report from the funeral, said the
family has now no source of income and no potential for employment
with Kahlon now in jail. It seems now a trust fund is being set up.
The account is in Rajvinder's name at TD Canada Trust, number
6401672.
