Punjab Police cops beat man to death on the road
WSN Bureau

Moga: Punjab Police, which once tasted blood during the days of militancy, has turned into a peculiarly bloody force. When a totally innocent Sikh man was unable to brake his scooter when cops waved him down, and stopped only a few yards later, they simply beat him to death.

Pritam Singh, a 25-year-old labourer, did his best to stop the scooter but because of loosened brakes, he could stop only a few yards after the police naka (barrier) on Moga-Amritsar road. The baton-wielding poliecmen, eight in number, beat him up so much right on the road that he had to be immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital, Moga where he bled to death.

The two hospital employees there were drunk and Pritam received little help. Indian media reported the story as it would have reported potato yields, did not follow it even the next day, cared not tell any details about Pritam's family and avoided giving out names of the cops.

Pritam's cousin Gurpal Singh of Shah Bukar village was accompanying him when the cops showed their true colours.

The police later  registered an FIR, but again acted totally apathetically. It did not name the cops involved, did not include statement of Pritam's cousin who was there and mentioned no action against policemen. Not a single one was even suspended.
