Jallianwala Bagh martyrs are not
even freedom
fighters in records
WSN Network
Amritsar/Chandigarh:
In a good turn to our heritage and legacy of sacrifice and
martyrdom, the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu,
credited with many good ventures earlier, is now fighting to get
freedom fighters status for martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

What the

RC Nayak, deputy secretary, ministry of home affairs, FFR

August 14 that “FFR division of the ministry does not maintain
any list of martyrs of the Jallianwala massacre”. |

He made the
efforts to go through the British records of 1919 and found out how
the colonial government had tried to clean its bloody slate by
ordering a compensation for the senseless killings of 487 people on
April 13,
1919. But once free,
India
did not bother much about the martyrs. Now, a shamed Punjab
Government says it will initiate moves to bestow the status of
freedom fighters on them. The denial of freedom fighter's status
came to them in a response to a query under the Right to Information
Act, the Indian law that many citizens are using to get the
government to, part with information it usually denied.
In fact, Pannu
seems to be the first one who introduced the word ‘martyrs’ for
these people in the official records pertaining to the incident.
