Camp Gian brings knowledge, joy and
Sikhi spirit together
Sharanjit Kaur Sandhu
Los
Angeles: Approximately 170 Sikh youth from the ages of 5-20 gathered
at Gurdwara Vermont recently to attend the 10th annual
Camp
Gian,
an overnight camp dedicated to promoting the Sikh way of life and
strengthening Sikh morals and teachings.
The campers were
introduced to this year’s
Camp Gian theme
“Love is the path”. During the course of five days, the children
woke up at dawn to attend morning Diwan, that included recitation of
Nitnem and Simran. An act from a play that depicted the life of Guru
Gobind Singh Ji was performed.
The campers
attended three classes that discussed biographical facts about the
life of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, morals and values the Guru held, and
values that derive from Gurbani and are parallel to the modern
ideas.
Each
day, the campers would travel to
Griffith Park
for three-legged races, water balloon fights, sports games, and a
handful of other activities. Upon returning to the Gurdwara, they
tried their hand at gatka, kirtan, tabla, tying a dastar, making a
roti, or braid their hair during extensive learning classes.
Evening Diwan
included Rehraas Sahib, Simran, and Kirtan and also the campers
enjoyed quality time with one another during evening games such as
Family Feud and Sikh Jeopardy, movies, and discussion.
The last evening
saw the parents of the campers in attendance. All received their
annual Camp Gian gift bags, which, this year, included a
certificate, a trophy, a mug with the Camp Gian logo, Camp Gian
pajama pants, a Sikh board game, and a Camp Gian T-shirt.
