SRINAGAR/GUWAHATI/DEHRADUN: Give communal Indian streak half a
chance, and it makes a scandalous feast out of it, marauding its
minorities even in its hour of joy to increase the pleasure.
Celebrations over India clinching the inaugural Twenty20 Cricket
World Cup after defeating Pakistan at Johannesburg triggered violent
communal clashes in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Uttarakhand,
leaving scores of people injured on Monday night.
The police in all three states had to fire in the air to disperse
the mobs.
In J-K, crowds of celebrating Hindus allegedly threw firecrackers
into a mosque where Muslims were offering special Ramzan taravih
prayers. Enraged by the act, a group of Muslims came out and tried
to chase the crowd away by throwing stones. About 30 civilian
residents were hurt.
IGP (Jammu range) S.P. Vaid confirmed the incident.
In Sapatgram, under Bogaribari police station in western Assam's
Dhubri district, more than 20 persons, including two police
officers, were injured when the police opened fire to bring under
control a communal clash that broke out on Monday night after
India's victory.
In Uttarakhand, celebrations over the winning of the Twenty20 World
Cup led to clashes between two communities in Udham Singh Nagar late
on Monday night. The police fired in the air to disperse the warring
groups and additional forces were deployed to prevent the violence
from escalating. US Nagar also has dense Sikh population.
Members of one community burst crackers and took out a procession to
celebrate the victory, which was objected to by members of another
community. Soon the argument intensified and the clashes began,
leaving five persons seriously injured.
Police and paramilitary reinforcements had fanned out overnight in
the town, and particularly in sensitive localities, and a strict
vigil was being maintained, officials said. Rajouri has an almost
equal population of Hindus and Muslims.
At Jammu's government-run polytechnic, the hostels witnessed clashes
between groups of Hindu and Muslim students after India won the
Twenty20 World Cup. Muslim students alleged they were abused and
even attacked by the Hindu students. In Assam, Dhubri DSP Partha
Mahanta said clashes between the two communities started immediately
after India won the final.
