Badal says no meltdown effect, will
this convince
him otherwise?

Ludhiana: At a
time when the Punjab Government is totally denying it, and virtually
coinciding with the day when CM Parkash Singh Badal actually issued
a statement claiming that the effect of economic meltdown has been
near nil in Punjab, 47-year-old industrialist Karnail Singh commited
suicide.
He had shifted
his factory but the move coincided with meltdown, and he incurred
huge losses. The iron merchant, a resident of Shimlapuri area, took
the extreme step of taking his own life at his home late last
Wednesday evening. His wife of 17 years, Sarabjeet, 35, and their
two children, both minors, too, were found dead in an adjacent room.
“He was upset
because of falling iron prices. It had affected his business of
manufacturing bolts and other truck components. An extremely very
warm and jovial person, he had no enemies and it is difficult to
believe that he committed suicide,” recalled the industrialist’s
sister Sarabjeet, tears rolling down her cheeks.
Of course,
Badal's hangers on would have omitted telling him that the meltdown
cannot have more impact than simply killing people, and it is not
clear what will it take to sensitise the politicians about the lot
of the populace.
Youngest of the
six siblings, Karnail, who was also the secretary of small scale
industries association, leaves behind three brothers and two
sisters. Some businessmen said the incident could merely be a
beginning as the global meltdown and illegal trade practices will
leave small industrialists with no other option but to take their
own lives.
