Yuba City Gets Ready for Guru’ta
Gaddi Sikh Parade
WSN Network
YUBA CITY, CA:
Yuba
City’s Sikh sangat is all set to welcome the world and share its
happiness at one of the holiest days, 300th anniversary
of Guruta Gaddi, as it re-dedicates to the teachings of the great
Gurus, the Sikh scripture of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, with a three day
event from October 31 to November 2.
Kuldip Singh
Atwal, secretary of the Sikh gurdwara, described the occasion as a
“celebration of our religion” and an occasion to underline the
gratitude towards the Guru. Gurdwara president Didar Singh Bains
said the occasion has induced a renewed religiosity and will help
younger generations to reconnect. Akhand Path will begin on Oct 31
morning, and will be accompanied by Nishan Sahib Sewa. A spectacular
display of fireworks is also on schedule and is set to witness
five-inch canister fireworks that are usually only seen at the top
fireworks shows in the country.
California Lt.
Governor John Garamendi will be leading an Open House. Following the
bhog of the Akhand Path Sahib, the Guru ranth Sahib, always at the
center of any community activity and the Guru of the Sikhs, will be
carried onto a lavishly decorated float and will be ushered down the
Butte House Road.
There is massive
enthusiasm among the Sikh sangat which will be lining up along the
road, decorate the surroundings, and welcome the Guru into their
hearts. Flower petals will rain down from a helicopter hovering
above the ceremony and parade. Expect to see a lot of food booths
providing free drinks, snacks and prepared food for the milling
crowds.
By one estimate,
nearly a lakh will participate. More than 50 floats will be in the
parade. There is some curiosity to see the fleet of Harley Davidson
Motorcycle’s from the Sikh Motorcycle Club in British Columbia,
Canada. Kirtan and langar will be everywhere, as they are from
Nanded to Amritsar to Abbotsford. But what will be really important
is the display of Sikh core values in the symbolism that goes into
the preparation and serving of langar and spirit of brotherhood.
