Justice Kamaljit Singh Garewal

NATIONS: Justice Kamaljit Singh Garewal, a Sikh judge from Punjab,
who was elected in UN Appeals Tribunal (UNAT) as a judge, has been
sworn in for a period of seven years.
Justice Garewal
had got highest number of 154 votes in the 192-member General
Assembly. Others elected
to seven-year
terms on the Appeals Tribunal, beginning
1 July 2009,
were: Ms. Sophia Adinyira ( Ghana); Mr. Mark P. Painter ( United
States); Ms. Inés Weinberg de Roca ( Argentina); Mr. Jean Courtial (
France); Ms. Rose Boyko ( Canada); and Mr. Luis Maria Simón (
Uruguay).
In 2007, the
Assembly had established a two-tier formal system of administration
of justice comprising, United Nations Dispute Tribunal and UNAT to
deal with internal grievances and disciplinary cases related to the
staff and other employees of the organisation.
Justice Garewal
is among five new judges to serve on the United Nations Dispute
Tribunal, and seven for the United Nations Appeals Tribunal.
The judges serve
only one non-renewable term of seven years on either Tribunal, with
the exception of two of the initial judges of the Dispute Tribunal
and three of the initial judges of the Appeals Tribunal.

Drawing lots,
the Assembly has appointed Garewal, along with Painter ( United
States); Courtial ( France) to serve three-year terms on a
transitional basis on the Appeals Tribunal, beginning 1 July 2009.
Justice Garewal
retired as a judge from the Punjab and Haryana High Court and hails
from Qila Raipur’s village Lalton. He studied at St Stephens
College, Delhi and later at Mayo College, Ajmer. Incidentally,
Justice Garewal’s maternal grandfather Sardar Bahadur Vasakha Singh
was among three top thekedars of Delhi, theother two being S. Sobha
Singh (father of well known journalist Khushwant Singh) and Ranjit
Singh of Sangrur.
