LODHI: Declaring water resources as a gift of God to mankind, Akal
Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh has given a call to the Sikh
community across the world to work for a clean environment.
He said it was
the need of the day to focus on environmental issues, especially the
preservation of natural water resources.
"Not only Sikhs
in Punjab but across the world should pay attention to cleaning up
and maintaining God-gifted water resources, rather than building new
gurdwaras. Caring for the environment is our moral, religious and
social responsibility, and we should concentrate on the problems
relating to it," he said.
Speaking at the
anniversary celebrations of "kar sewa" (voluntary service) on the
Kali Bein here, Giani Gurbachan Singh lauded the effort put in to
clean up the rivulet, while calling upon the people of Punjab to
take up other rivers too. He noted the use of religious idiom and
symbolism for motivating people to work on the Bein was a good idea.
Dr Inderjit
Kaur, head of the All-India Pingalwara Charitable Trust, recalled
the contribution of Bhagat Puran Singh, who founded the trust in
Amritsar, in creating environmental awareness as far back as a few
decades, when people were yet to realise it as a matter of concern.
On the occasion,
pioneer of the river clean-up movement in Punjab Baba Balbir Singh
Seechewal said now he would turn attention to the Kala Sanghian
drain, Chitti Bein and the Sutlej to stop the inflow of dirty water
into these water bodies.
