Ghar Vaapsi, announces Bir Devinder,
but things have changed since
Mansukh Kaur
CHANDIGARH: In
2007, Bir Devinder Singh was miffed with the Congress party because
he was denied ticket for Kharar Assembly seat. He had felt sidelined
even during the entire five year rule under Amarinder Singh. But
every time there was talk of leaving the party, Bir would hold that
Congress was his mother. There will be tears in his eyes, and he
would end with one or the other Urdu couplet underlining his pain.
This time, have
been denied the Congress ticket for Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha seat,
Bir Devinder's patience gave way. He hee-hawed for some time, then
found the Tytler clean chit issue a good cue, and quit the
Congress.
On Tuesday, Bir
Devinder was in Akali Dal. "Ghar Vaapsi!" he announced. He was
president of the All India Sikh Students Federation at one time, and
then after 30 years in Congress, he thought returning home was a
great idea. He was happy to be in the arms of Sukhbir Badal, someone
who officially write the epitaph of AISSF by setting up Students
Organisation of India (SOI) and bringing the money-mafia-muscle
culture in an institutionalised way into Akali Dal and
Punjab
polity.
Either Bir will
have to enhance his capacity to absorb this new reality, or he would
have to kill his inner voice that troubled him time and again on
issues like
Lovely
University bill and city center scam in Ludhiana.
Bir Devinder and
Sukhbir Badal do have a common cause in going hammer and tongs
against former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh. But he signifies
is the turncoat culture. Along with Sukhdev Singh Libra and
Gurcharan Singh Galib, Bir Devinder is in a club that does not enjoy
a great reputation as far as political sagacity is concerned. That
he has good legislative skills is a recognised fact, but then
entrenched interests often use the best and the brilliant to ends
that they decide. Bir Devinder was a dissenting voice in Congress;
in the Akali Dal, he will be a cog in a machine that runs only to
help churn profits of politics for the Badals.
