Sikh man assaulted in Melbourne
WSN Network

MELBOURNE:  A Sikh man sleeping at a bus stop was punched in his head by a group of Australians, who also removed his turban. The incident has sent shockwaves among the Sikh community throughout the world.

The police said they were investigating the "unprovoked" assault on the 22-year-old Sikh youth on Sunday. The name and other details have been withheld.

"The Yarraville man was asleep at a stop near Epping railway station in Cooper Street about 12.45 a.m. on Sunday when a bus pulled into the depot and five males, believed to be between 17 and 19 years approached him," The Age newspaper reported.

Two of the five youths then allegedly beat the Sikh man while their three companions are believed to have tried to stop the assault, the report said.

The five youths managed to escape from the scene.

This is the latest in a series of racially-motivated attacks on students from the community.
