Sahaita reaches micro-venture in
Punjab
Dr. Harkesh Singh
Sandhu

During our visit
to Punjab we had a chance to visit and hold a medical camp at an
Institution near Padialla (on Kharar-Kurali Road), which is run by
Universal disabled caretaker social and welfare society. This
reminded us of our days in Amritsar when we used to visit Pingalwara
during medical school days. This small place has about 68 residents
who are suffering from various mental and physical disorders. Most
of the residents were women who either have developmental disability
both physical and mental. Some young women and children who have
been sexually assaulted and left on the streets are also brought to
this place from neighboring towns and villages. There are about 15
orphans and disabled kids also. The children who can go to school
are getting education. Some patients with mental disability have
rage and agitation problem and become violent for which they have
separate cells at facility to avoid them getting hurt or hurting
others. We are sharing some of the pictures of the residents of this
facility.
Sardar Samsher
Singh ji who is a Pharmacist by profession, but devoting his time
and energy looking after these unfortunate individuals. His wife
Mrs. Rajinder Kaur has also dedicated her life to this cause. From
time to time these
patients get full checkup. This place has long waiting list as the
resources and space was limited. They carry a big loan on this
institution, which makes it hard to hire more help and take care of
more needy people.
People from
surrounding villages off and on help them with food/ building
material needs. Sangat from Kuwait has also helped them with
building and ambulance. If anyone needs more information about this
place they can go to their website www.caredisabled.org. We strongly
encourage anyone who is visiting Punjab and has time to please go
and visit this facility and then you will know why Sahaita is
committed to help this facility. We should not let such small
institutions suffer while everyone concentrates on big places like
Pingalwara as that won’t be fair to all these people in need. For
