Guru Gobind Singh Marg proposal cleared
WSN Network

Chandigarh: With the Center approving the plans, the way is now clear for laying down a 2,400-kilometre-long road from Talwandi Sabo to Nanded in Maharashtra to commemorate the Guru'ta Gaddi Diwas, naming the road after the tenth Sikh Master, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

The National Committee to commemorate the tercentenary of Guru'ta-Gaddi Diwas headed by Home Minister Shivraj Patil approved the plan.

The 2,480-kilometre National Highway — tracing the places visited by Guru Gobind Singh Ji during his lifetime — would pass through Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pardesh, Madhya Pardesh and Maharashtra.

New Delhi's nod came after a meeting of Parkash Singh Badal with the Indian Internal Security Minister Shiv Raj Patil and Union Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni at Parliament House on Friday. With Badal proposing that this historic route be treated as a national highway with a religious nomenclature, the concerned states have already been sounded about the proposal.

Patil later assured Badal that he would urge the Union cabinet to expedite progress on the project. Guru'ta Gaddi Divas would be observed on October 7 next year. Ambika Soni, meanwhile, would soon convene a follow up meeting with the representatives of the state government to further chalk out the modalities for implementation of the road project before the Guru'ta Gaddi Diwas celebrations kick-off.

The Guru Gobind Singh Marg — from Takht Sri Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo) to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib (Nanded)- would be 1,828 kms long in addition to the route from Delhi to Ajmer via Agra measuring 652 kms. The total length of the route would be 2,480 kms. Guru Gobind Singh had traveled from Talwandi Sabo in Punjab, where he had compiled the Guru Granth Sahib, to Nanded.
