Reading Badal's Republic Day message
WSN Network

In his Republic Day message, Punjab Chief Minister and Akali Dal's patron Parkash Singh Badal not only missed an opportunity to underline the aspirations of the Sikh nation and bring to the fore the agendas of the deprived and the marginalised but instead spouted official rhetoric and meaningless drivel of beautiful phrases repeated ad nauseum by brahamnical Indian politicians with no intentions of keeping their word.

Badal validated the entire official version of the freedom struggle and said at that time, "the whole nation was swinging forth in a synergy of passion, dreams and commitment." He even backed the Nehruvian vision saying describing the moment as the "hour of our tryst with destiny."

Badal found no problems with the Constitution but wanted more federal structure. Howvere, the key focus remained on his "constant love for our motherland and firm commitment to preserve India’s glory". The last action Badal took in this direction was perhaps to make his son a Deputy Chief Minister.

Badal, who was in the forefront for sometime to protest against New Delhi's totalitarian and discriminatory policies before deciding to have a truck with the ultra-nationalist Hindu rigth wing BJP, took special care to add that "It is satisfying for me that as a nation, we have triumphed over numerous odds, thanks to our commitment to democracy, secularism, unity and integrity. It is, indeed, an occasion for celebration and rejoicing...We are the largest democracy in the world, perhaps the most vibrant and resilient." Shame, as they say, is a very individual quality.
