Honor killing in Punjab: Girl's kin
kill couple
WSN Network
Amritsar: Shame of
honor killing returned to Punjab once again when a newly married
couple, which had approached the police and judiciary for protection
because their families were against their marriage, was shot dead in
Tarn Taran by the girl's kin. Hours before, the police had received
orders from the Punjab and Haryana High Court that they were to be
protected.
Balkar Singh and Ravinder Pal Kaur were shot dead separately.
Both belonged to villages of Tarn Taran district. The couple had
gotten married on January 1 this year.
The family of the 19-year-old girl shot dead the boy near
Gurdwara Bir Baba Budha Sahib in Thatha village. The boy, along with
her bride, had come to his house for the first time after marriage.
A report in The Tribune newspaper said Balkar had gone to buy
eatables in the nearby market for his relatives who were coming from
England. A
group of armed persons alighted from three cars and chased him. They
opened fire at him, killing him on the spot.
Jaimal Singh, a brother of Balkar, said the armed members of
the family then reached their house. They parked their vehicles a
few metres away from the house. On spotting Ravinder, who was
sitting on the terrace at that time, they fired at her. When she
tried to escape by jumping from the terrace, they caught hold of her
and shot her into the head.
Jaimal was returning home after enquiring after his close
relations who had recently met with an accident, when he witnessed
the gruesome murder.
Among the killers were the girl's father Kabal Singh, wife
Rajinder Kaur, Rajbir Singh (brother of the girl), Jatinder Singh
and Sarmail Singh, both cousins, and Manjinder Singh, an uncle of
the girl who resides in nearby village of Ehma.
