Graft galore among Punjab Police

Nearly 134 Punjab Police officers in Patiala and 13 in Mohali are
facing criminal prosecution under various charges, with corruption
topping the list of offences. While 33 out of 134 police officers
are facing corruption charges in Patiala, 11 of the 13 Mohali
officers are in the dock for graft.
The information has been obtained by Resurgence India, a
Ludhiana-based NGO. It was placed in the
Punjab and Haryana
High Court on Tuesday in the form of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur and
Justice Hemant Gupta issued notices to the Punjab government and the
Director General of Police in response to the PIL. The petitioner
has demanded that such police officers be suspended, dismissed or
transferred as per the Punjab Police Rules.
In the
Patiala
district, cases against three inspectors, one sub-inspector, eight
assistant sub-inspectors, 11 head constables and 12 constables are
under investigation. Moreover, one inspector, four SI, seven ASI, 33
head constables and 48 constables are facing trial. One inspector
and four constables have, meanwhile, been convicted by a trial court
in Patiala. While 33 police officers are facing corruption cases, 31
have been charged with negligence of duty. Thirteen police officers
are facing prosecution under forgery or cheating, four have been
charged with murder, three with kidnapping and seven with
drug-related offences.
In Mohali, out of the 13 police officers facing criminal
prosecution, 11 have been charged with corruption, one with illegal
detention and one under the section of other offences. Cases against
two sub-inspectors, one assistant sub-inspector, a head constable
and one constable are under investigation. Moreover, one inspector,
sub-inspector, three head constables and a constable are under
trial. One inspector, three sub-inspectors, an assistant
sub-inspector, four head constables and four constables have,
meanwhile, been convicted.
