Top cops arrested
in Moga sleaze case
WSN Bureau
CHANDIGARH:
In
a case exposing how the law enforcers can turn law breakers, India’s
top sleuthing agency, the CBI, has arrested former Moga SSP Davinder
Singh Garcha and SP (headquarters) in Ropar Paramjeet Singh for
their alleged involvement in the infamous Moga sex scandal case.
Garcha, who was a member of the national hockey team that
participated in the Moscow Olympics, is posted at the Punjab police
headquarters as AIG (security).
The CBI raided the residences of both officers and recovered around
Rs 4 lakh from Garcha’s house and Rs 2 lakh in cash from Paramjeet’s
house. Both officials were arrested under the Prevention of
Corruption Act and taken to the CBI headquarters in Sector 30 for
questioning. “Garcha and Paramjeet were arrested following
disclosures made by former SHO of Moga (city-I) police station Raman
Kumar and some other accused personnel booked by Punjab police but
were given a clean chit after they allegedly paid huge amounts to
the arrested officers,” revealed a CBI official.
The sex scandal involving police officials, local politicians,
councillors and influential persons first came to light in June last
year following reports in the media of Moga police extorting money
in connivance with call girls. Startling facts came out of the
Punjab
police closet that local police and politicians used the scandal to
extort money by threatening rich and influential persons by slapping
sexual abuse charges against them. Inquiries revealed that rich
businessmen of the district were arrested for sexually exploiting
minor girls and were later released after taking huge bribes.
In
some cases, politicians harassed their opponents using the threat of
fake complaints of sexual harassment.
