Mother, whose
inlaws snatched her child, returns to Canada
WSN Network
MONTREAL: A
mother whose in-laws tried to deprive her of the infant child after
the death of her husband has finally returned to
Montreal.
She had accused the inlaws of kidnapping her child while she was at
her husband's funeral in India and held by them for almost two
months.
Depinder Kaur
Hundal and her 11-month-old son, Aviraj Singh Aulakh, arrived in
Montreal
last week. She was interviewed by the CBC News which followed the
story. She was granted permanent custody of her son by an Indian
court. Hundal had gone to India to attend the funeral of her
husband, Jatinder Singh Aulakh, who had died in a car accident
there. While she was there, she stayed with her husband's family in
Chandigarh, but one fine day found her son and mother-in-law
missing. A friend who has been sheltering Hundal has also been
threatened. The kidnappers seem to be a powerful family with
political and police connections. They wanted the son as their heir
and had offered Hundal financial incentivesbut the mother in her
rejected all offers.
Hundal had
reported physical assault too after an Aug. 8 court session where
the judge in
India granted
her temporary custody of the child. She appreciated the court's
decision and also thanked the Canadian High Commission for its role.
