California churches against
same-sex marriages reaches
out to Sikhs
WSN Network
CALIFORNIA: This
is one issue that has not been discussed much either among the
Diaspora or even back home in Punjab. Same sex marriages issue
however continues to hog space in mainstream media and mental space
and has now pushed many communities to take a public stance.
A report in the
Los Angeles Times said by late next month, some 1 million Mormons,
Catholics, Jews, Muslims, evangelical Christians, Sikhs and Hindus
plan to march down their front walks and plant "Yes on Proposition
8" signs in their yards to show they support repealing same-sex
marriage in California.
The plan
underscores that the "alliances across religious boundaries could
herald new ways of building coalitions around political issues in
California."
The report
quoted Gaston Espinosa, a professor of religious studies at
Claremont
McKenna
College,
as saying that the region is likely to see a lot more such
"pan-religious, faith-based political action strategies".
"The greatest
involvement in the campaign has come from Mormons, Catholics and
evangelical Christians, who say they are working together much more
closely than they did eight years ago when a similar measure,
Proposition 22, was on the ballot," the report said, adding the
activists are making efforts to reach out to Jews, Muslims, Sikhs
and Hindus.
The California
Supreme Court's ruling in May has allowed same-sex marriages to be
performed in the state since June 17 when these marriages became
legal.
As the campaign
intensifies this fall, both sides in the fight over Proposition 8
say they expect religious leaders and their congregations to
continue to play a big role.
