Virk’s judicial
remand extended

Mohali: The sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM), Mohali, Lalit
Kumar Singla on Monday extended the judicial remand of former Punjab
DGP SS Virk for 14 days, that is till October 8.
He gave this
decision at the special courtroom established at Virk’s private room
at PGI, where he is undergoing treatment. Mediapersons were forced
to stay outside the makeshift courtroom by security personnel,
despite Singla’s directions to allow them access to the trial.
Ashish Kapoor, DSP
headquarters and security chief, said the SDJM had allowed entry to
only his staff, defence counsel, public prosecutor and the accused.
“We had no other orders,” he said. On the other hand, Singla told
the angry newsmen, “No one was asked to stop you.”
Meanwhile, defence
counsel Charanjeet Bakshi told newsmen after the hearing that the
vigilance bureau had asked for a judicial remand of 45 days, which
surprised all in the courtroom. “I have not heard of such a long
judicial remand. This act of theirs will force us to think more and
do less,” said Bakshi.
He attended the
hearing with a team of five other lawyers. Earlier, after PGI’s
special board of doctors report about Virk’s inability to travel to
Ropar, Justice Rekha Mittal directed the SDJM to complete the
proceedings conducting the legal proceedings in PGI itself.
